Throughout the thermal cracking process of crude oil, soft carbon is formed from high heat and pressure. Soft carbon is a solid just before it becomes petroleum coke and can still be snapped in two.

Soft Carbon Remover


The equipment needed to do a chemical corrective cleaning using ORANGE-SOL Soft Carbon Remover is a tank, a pump, shutoff valves for the piping to build a recirculation system, and shutoff valves to block off the heat exchanger from the rest of the refining process equipment.

Once the circulation system is in place, the tank is filled with ORANGE-SOL Soft Carbon Remover. The pump is then turned on to fill the entire heat exchanger with product. One heat exchanger or an entire bank can be cleaned at a time.

Once the system is full, the valves are closed to the pump and the pump is turned off.

ORANGE-SOL product then takes action in the heat exchangers for 12 hours. After the 12 hours is complete, valves are opened and pump turned on to re-circulate the ORANGE-SOL Soft Carbon Remover for 72 to 96 hours continually.

At the end of the recirculation time, the pump is turned off and liquid from the heat exchanger drains into the tank. When the tank is full or while the tank is filling, the liquid is then pumped back into the original totes.

The liquid is black and the soft carbon is dissolved or liquefied. There is no hazardous waste because ORANGE-SOL Soft Carbon Remover does not affect the physical or chemical properties of crude oil therefore, it is put into the crude oil tanks for reprocessing or put into the combustible oil tanks as combustible fuel.

To demonstrate this, two pieces of soft carbon are placed in a glass beaker filled with ORANGE-SOL Soft Carbon Remover. The glass beaker is placed on an agitator to simulate a pump moving the liquid through the heat exchanger to create agitation.

After 45 minutes the 2 pieces of soft carbon are reduced to a size that will pass through the heat exchanger tubes without causing fouling or blockage and all the hydrocarbons are now liquefied in the glass beaker. These liquefied hydrocarbons are valuable and can be put back into the crude oil storage tanks and be reprocessed. No hazardous waste is generated!
